proposal for mapping video (proj 1)
Initially, I began thinking of different ways to represent alternate points of view on something, different ways to look at a thing, and though I started out with considering what different people might see, I gradually began coming up with varying ways to see things, rather than just angles, different thought processes. From there, I wound up stumbling across an idea I really liked:
One track will be a straightforward video, showing motion, action, a view of a thing/moment in time being experienced.
The second will be a series of stills taken from the main video (or the same general area, probably zoomed closer). At first, I thought of these as photographs, as what you use to aid your memory of an experience..but then I realised that in memory, it is more often simply still images that are remembered, more than long sequences of action. Brief sequences at most, but when I think back to places and events, it's usually one or two images of what a place looked like, the location of rooms in a house or the way moonlight colored a field pale blue.
...after thinking about it more, however, I'm willing to toy with the idea of stills, maybe I'd put in brief snippets of motion, with the color and focus altered, to imitate memory.
For the third track, my initial idea was to show text, probably video of something I'd handwritten (or maybe video of me writing it), with the text's subject being my interpretation of what I remember seeing. This is finishes the process shown in the tracks - that of making art, of seeing things, remembering, and pulling things from there, shaping them into art, refining and abstracting and pinpointing.
I have some ideas on how to make the text look graphically appealing, but I realise it's not the strongest element usually, and I may decide to change this.
...as for the actual subject being shown in the video, that I haven't entirely pinned down. In my previous video class, I found that what worked best for me was heading out with a camera for an hour with a general sense of the feeling or idea I wanted to capture, and then just shooting, noting all the small corners and things I usually do when I'm walking around, and I always find something interesting, though it's not always what I expected. For this, I'm thinking of either walking around some of my favourite places on campus (my impending graduation would make this a nice subject for a memory map), or, depending on my schedule, pioneer cemetary or the old college building in town, both of which seem to be laden with memories still clinging to them. (And are much better visually. <3)
...any thoughts or suggestions are super-appreciated, though I'm sure we'll discuss these in class.
